As we move forward in the digital age, I find myself reflecting on the importance of real-life connections and gatherings. While social media has its place, there’s something irreplaceable about coming together in person. This belief has been a cornerstone of my journey, dating back to my time in Phoenix, Arizona.
Back then, I initiated what I called Urban Soulcial – underground dinner-supper-party events that provided a platform for small, up-and-rising creators and brand launchers. This was before the era of social media influencers and pop-up shops. These urban socials were a space where we could break bread together, showcase talent, and foster connections between diverse groups of people.
The essence of these gatherings was to bring people from different walks of life together. My friends ranged from artists, poets, and musicians to entrepreneurs and tech enthusiasts. Despite their different worlds, I saw the common ground they shared and the potential for collaboration. By bringing them together, we created a unique synergy that was both creatively enriching and practically beneficial.
This was back in early 2010, long before such events became mainstream. My intuition tells me that this way of gathering will become increasingly important as we navigate the future, particularly in 2024. Creating neutral, safe spaces for people to explore their creativity, speak their minds, and connect authentically is more crucial than ever.
I currently have the privilege of being the guardian and steward of a historic church. This beautiful building, which was originally a religious institution, is more than just a physical space; it’s a testament to the resilience and history of the African American community in this quaint beach town. Established by ex-enslaved Black people from the area, the church holds a rich history and a vibrant energy that I want to share with others.
We are reimagining this space, transforming it from a religious institution into a community venue. Our focus is on the experience of being in this space and using it as a learning opportunity. We want visitors to be inspired to return to their own communities with a new perspective on the importance of adaptive reuse – the practice of repurposing old buildings for new uses. This approach not only preserves the historical and cultural significance of these structures but also breathes new life into them, making them relevant and functional for today’s needs.
In essence, my goal has always been to build community through in-person interactions. I believe in the power of communing and breaking bread together, whether with family, friends, or strangers. These connections are the bedrock of a vibrant, supportive community.
Additionally, my portfolio and previous work experience in various areas stand as evidence of the work I have done and will continue to do. I understand that many people are not familiar or comfortable with someone who is a generalist in several different areas, also known as a multipotentialite. My diverse skill set has allowed me to navigate through different communities and parts of the country, aligning me with incredible people who have supported and continue to support me on this journey. I invite you to visit my portfolio website to see the evidence of my work and the breadth of my experiences.
As we move throught 2024 and into 2025, I invite you all to join me in embracing the power of gathering. Let’s create spaces where we can connect authentically, support each other, and build a stronger, more inclusive community. Let’s also take the lessons learned from our gatherings and apply them to our own communities, supporting those who are doing important work around adaptive reuse and preservation.
